The first day we covered most of the distance, stopping in New Brunswick for the night.
New Brunswick was very green, covered in dense forest and signs advising of moose, however apart from the signs we did not see any.
We found a campsite about 10 min from the highway, next to a small lake near Oromocto (just past Fredericton NB). It was a lovely site and a really relaxing place to stop after a long drive. We Skyped Andrea (My little brother Daniel girlfriend's mum) to let her know that we would be arriving in PEI the next day and organised some directions to the cottage.
Next day we slept in (which was awesome), packed up and made a move as we only had 3 hours left to travel so a late start was sweet.
On the way we stopped at a point of interest called ‘Magnetic Hill', it was pretty cool. For $5 you got to drive down the hill and then apparently be pulled up the hill by the Magnetic force. We drove the car down, put it in neutral and then we were pulled up the hill. It was amazing… until we found out that it was not an actual magnet, we were actually rolling down a hill, and it was just an optical illusion. Still good fun though.
By mid afternoon we had made it to the confederation bridge. A 12.9km bridge that connects mainland Canada to PEI. The drive over the bridge was weird as we were completely surrounded by water.
After crossing the bridge we were in PEI at a place called ‘Borden’ where we stopped for some tourist maps and another magnet for the collection. Then continued on to Charlottetown where we stopped for some subway and supplies.
PEI was beautiful; farms, green rolling hills, trees, red soil and cute little holiday cottages.
We made our way to the cottage at ‘Keppoch Estates’ an amazing place right by the beach. The cottage was built over 50 years ago. An amazing holiday home with all the basic necessities for all the family to relax and enjoy the summer months together; 5 bedrooms packed with beds to fit as many bodies as possible, open living/kitchen and 1 small bathroom. It was awesome!
The whole family were super nice and welcoming. The first night we got to share a feast of flank stake and local vegetables, which was amazing. Later we kicked back for some drinks and hung out by the fire eating smores (we felt really Canadian).
We also got to experience a ‘Potato Cannon’ (aka spud gun), load and shoot it off into East Keppoch... not too sure where that was but nobody complained. Awesome first night.
Day 1: After a slow start to the day, Brenda and Sarah took us for a walk down the beach. The colour of the sand was amazing as it was red because of the soil of the Island. The tide was still in so there was only a small amount of beach to walk on.
We saw a fossilized tree and Sarah took us up to see an old empty cottage just off the beach it was very cool.
Late morning the weather was overcast so we headed out for a drive around the Island to see PEI National Park. I could not get over how red the soil was on the Island (no wonder their potatoes are so good). We stopped off at Covehead Bay for some fish and chips at Richard’s, I had the fish and chips Marc had the lobster roll (delicious).
After lunch we went to Brackley Beach for a walk. It was a cold walk but I loved being on a beach near the ocean again.
On the way back to the cottage we stopped off at the 'Junes' a cool café with loads of artwork to look at and buy.
Then we headed to the main tourist attraction of PEI (which was lost on us) the cottage from the book ‘Anne of Green Gables'; a big tourist attraction for fans of the book. It was interesting to see but that was about it. Maybe I should read the book.
That night at the cottage we just kicked back, relaxed and ate some pizza, great way to end the day.
Day 2: I was hoping to have a beach day but the weather was not cooperating. Just before lunchtime we headed into Charlottetown for a look around then met Andrea, Alex and Peter for lunch. Charlottetown was a really cute city with loads of old houses and little shops. We had lunch at the Merchant Man, the food was really good I got a burger and Marc got some mussels that he devoured. The seafood in PEI is crazy good and cheap as the bowl of mussels was was only $10 and it was huge.
Late afternoon we returned to the cottage and walked down to the beach for a swim. The sun had come out but it was still not warm enough to swim. The tide was out so Marc and I walked around the shallows. It was crazy the ocean was beaming with life, hundreds of hermit crabs, Jellyfish and crabs. Marc and I were a little worried about standing on the crabs but apparently they are solid little creatures and it’s better just to walk and they will move out of the way.
That night at the cottage Jen shucked some oysters for everyone, then after dinner we enjoyed some drinks and just kicked back. We were getting used to the lazy lifestyle and had decided to stay for an extra few days.
Day 3: A really early start as Marc had booked us on a deep sea fishing trip that departed at 8am, luckily it was the first really nice day. We boarded the little boat and took off.
There were about 18 people on the boat that made fishing pretty crowded. Our first stop was just out to sea, we dropped the lines in and we were fishing for Mackerel. It was really easy as the fish were basically hooked as soon as it was in the water. Marc caught about 5 or 6 and I caught about 2 as I stopped to take photos.
Next we headed out a bit deeper to fish for cod. We had to change location about 4 times as not too many fish were biting. I caught a bottom feeder ugly fish that I threw back but Marc was like Rex hunt and caught 3 cod in total. 2 were too small and he threw them back, but one was the correct weight and he got to keep it. Marc was really happy and at the end of the day only 2 cod were caught for the whole trip. One girl on the boat caught a huge halibut, however had to throw it back as they were only allowed to be fished one day a week. Overall not a bad first experience at least both Marc and I can now say we have caught a fish.
After fishing we headed back to the cottage for lunch and to spend the afternoon at the beach. Once we got back Marc went to a driving range with Jamie and I headed straight for the beach.
It was a lovely afternoon on the beach in the sun, we swam and went for walks up and down the shore.
That night we had another delicious feast of vegetables, Marc’s cod, chicken and salmon. Everyone had a bit to drink and we had lots of fun with the potato canon, smores and hanging out around the fire. I don't think we ever wanted to leave.
Day 4: Was meant to be the Keppoch family fun day however it was postponed due to the weather as it would not stop raining (to our disappointment). As it was pouring there was not too much to do so Marc and I went back to Charlottetown to purchase a Harley Davidson souvenir for dad and then have lunch at the 'Gahan'. After lunch we found a mall and wondered around the shops as it was still pouring down with rain.
When we returned to the cottage Andrea had organised lobster for dinner, which was amazing. The kitchen table was covered with plastic and then a huge pile of lobsters were dumped on the table ready for us to eat. Andrea demonstrated to us how to crack open and eat the lobster then Marc did the rest. I cracked open a claw but preferred to just eat the meat while Marc did the work. It was a great experience and so yummy dipping the lobster meat in the butter and vinegar.

Day 5: Time to move again, we packed up the car and got everything ready to go. It was really sad to say goodbye to our new family of 4 days but we were ready to keep moving. We left the cottage around 11pm to get the 1pm Ferry from Wood Islands to Nova Scotia. We had now changed our original plans and instead of going directly to the US we were going to tour around Nova Scotia as we had been told it is worth checking out by the fam.
